Vanessa L. Williams stars as Ruby, a former dance champion who dreams of reviving her once promising career while languishing as an instructor at a rundown dance studio owned by John Burnett (Kris Kristofferson). Her dream and disciplined, classic method of dancing are challenged by the arrival of Rafael Infante (Chayanne), a passionate but unschooled young Cuban who wins the heart of nearly everyone with his enthusiastic, spontaneous style. Although recognizing the soulfulness of his dance, Ruby has little respect for his undisciplined and technically inferior style. But soon the young Rafael begins to teach the professional what he has known all along.
